Between 7 and 8 million Americans of all ages (3% of the general population), experience intellectual disabilities. One in ten families in the United States, are directly affected by a person with intellectual disabilities. The intellectually disabled are often overlooked and marginalized in our society. They may suffer from Autism, sensory impairments or physical disabilities. The care, safety, and quality of life of all disabled persons must be assured and tailored to their individual needs.
The mission of the Columbian Foundation Supporting People With Intellectual Disabilities, Inc. (the “Foundation“) is to promote and provide financial support to IRS 501(c)(3) organizations which provide care and activities to people with intellectual disabilities.
Our Knights of Columbus Council #13111 at St. Thomas More Parish supports the Foundation with our annual ID (Intellectual Disabilities) Drive whereby we accept donations for Camp ReCreation, which is a week long summer camp for adults and children with disabilities. 100% of the proceeds that we collect goes to the camp.
The camp gives those with intellectual disabilities an opportunity to experience spiritual, emotional, mental and physical growth. For over 38 years these camps have provided specially designed programs for people with special needs in a safe, fun and spiritual environment where campers can shine and be accepted. These programs allow thousands of campers and volunteers to create friendships and memories that last a lifetime.
It also provides opportunities for Southern California youth to learn the benefits of volunteerism as they provide one on one care and friendship to the campers.
